Sheet metal stamping is a cold forming process. In order to obtain stamped parts of the desired shape and size, presses and molds apply external forces to metal plates, strips, pipes, and profiles, causing them to deform or separate.

    What is stamping?

In order to obtain stamped parts of the desired shape and size, presses and molds apply external forces to metal plates, strips, pipes, and profiles, causing them to deform or separate. This process is called metal stamping or punching.

The main blank for stamping is hot-rolled or cold-rolled steel plate or strip. In the world, 60-70% of steel is sheet metal, most of which will be stamped into finished products.

What are the advantages of stamping parts?

Compared with other mechanical or plastic processing methods, stamping has many unique advantages in terms of technology and economy. The main manifestations are as follows.

    (1) Efficient.

Stamping technology has high production efficiency, easy operation, and is easy to achieve mechanization and automation. This is because stamping relies on stamping molds and stamping equipment to complete the processing. The stroke frequency of a regular press can reach dozens of times per minute, while a high-speed press can reach hundreds or even thousands of times per minute. And each stroke process can result in a stamped part.

    (2) Stable quality.

The quality of stamped parts is stable and the interchangeability is also good. Because the mold ensures the dimensional and shape accuracy of the stamped parts. Generally, it will not damage the surface quality of stamped parts, and the lifespan of the mold is also very long.

    (3) Wide applicability

The size range of stamped parts is very large, and the shape of stamped parts can also be very complex. The scope of stamped parts ranges from small items such as stopwatches to large items such as car longitudinal beams and coverings.

The strength and stiffness of stamped parts are also very high, due to the cold deformation and hardening effects of the material during the stamping process.

    (4) Low cost

Stamping is a material saving and energy-saving processing method with low cost of stamping parts. Because no chips or debris are generated during the stamping process, and very little material is consumed, no other heating equipment is required.

What are the limitations of stamped parts?

    1. Mold issues

Generally, stamping molds are specialized. Sometimes, multiple sets of molds are needed to form a complex part, which also requires high precision and technical requirements.

Stamping parts are technology intensive products, and only large-scale production can demonstrate advantages and achieve good economic benefits.

    2. Safety issues

The main problem or disadvantage of stamping is the noise and vibration generated during the stamping process. In addition, safety accidents involving operators occur from time to time. However, these problems are not entirely caused by stamping processes or molds, but by traditional stamping equipment and outdated manual operations. Of course, with the development of science and technology, especially computer technology and mechatronics integration technology, these problems will soon be solved.

What is the application of stamping?

Stamping processing has a wide range of applications in various fields due to its superiority. Stamping parts are widely used in aerospace, aviation, military industry, machinery, agricultural machinery, electronics, communication fields, railways, postal and telecommunications, transportation, chemical industry, medical equipment, household appliances, light industry and other fields. Stamping parts are not only used in the entire industry, but also have a direct connection with everyone. For example, there are many large, medium, and small stamped parts on airplanes, trains, cars, and tractors. Many car parts are produced through stamping, such as body, frame, wheel rims, and other components. According to relevant surveys and statistics, 80% of bicycles, sewing machines, and watches are stamped parts. 90% of televisions, recorders, and cameras are stamped parts. There are also some food metal can shells, steel boilers, enamel bowls, and stainless steel tableware. All these products are stamped from molds.
