What is five axis linkage machining?

Compared with four axis CNC machining, an additional rotating axis has been added to five axis CNC machining. The fifth axis rotates around the Y-axis, also known as the B-axis. Workpieces can also rotate on certain machines. Sometimes they are referred to as the b-axis or c-axis.

Five axis machining is a type of CNC machining method that uses linear interpolation of any 5 coordinates, including X, Y, Z, A, B, and C. The machine tools commonly used for five axis machining are called five axis machines or five axis machining centers.

Simultaneous five axis linkage or five axis linkage refers to a machine with at least five coordinate axes, including three linear coordinates and two rotational coordinates. In addition, these coordinates can be coordinated and processed simultaneously under the control of a computer numerical control (CNC) system.

Five axis linkage is a term in numerical control. Linkage refers to the ability of the axes of a CNC machine tool to simultaneously reach a certain set point at a certain speed. Five axis linkage refers to the ability of five axes to simultaneously reach a certain set value at a certain speed.

At present, there are two types of five axis machine tools. One type is five axis linkage machining, which can be simultaneously linked. Another method is five axis positioning machining, which is still five axis but three axis linkage. In this mode, two rotation axes are used for rotation and positioning, while the other three rotation axes can be processed simultaneously. This type of five axis machine tool is called the 3+2 mode, which can also be understood as a positioning five axis machine tool.

The difference between true five axis and positional five axis lies in whether they have RTCP function. RTCP stands for Rotary Tool Center Point.

A true five axis machining center

A true 5-axis machine has RTCP. Position 5 axis is missing.

If the five axis machine tool and CNC system do not have RTCP, CAM programming and post-processing are required to set the tool path in advance. For the same part, if the machine tool or tool is replaced, CAM programming and post-processing must be carried out again. Therefore, it can only be referred to as position five axis.

3+2 machining center or 5-axis positioning machining center

In short, the true five axis is five axis five linkage. The five axis positioning can be a five axis three link linkage, and the other two axes will play a role in positioning!

Considering the cost and technology of five axis machine tools, Metrixal has invested in true five axis machine tools and positioning five axis machine tools. At present, Metrixal has 10 true five axis machining centers and 10 positioning five axis machining centers.

Five axis linkage CNC machine tool is a high-tech and high-precision machine tool specifically designed for machining complex surfaces. This machine tool system is widely used in industries such as aviation, aerospace, military, scientific research, precision equipment, high-precision medical equipment, etc.

Due to the high versatility of five axis CNC machining, it is used to manufacture complex precision parts. Such as artificial prostheses or orthopedic medical parts, aerospace parts, titanium parts, oil and gas machinery parts, military products, etc.
